DISCUSSION

The First Temple (God Wants Relationship)

Genesis 1:1-2 New Living Translation

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Genesis 2:15-17 New Living Translation

15 The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— 17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

Exodus 25:8 New Living Translation

8 “Have the people of Israel build me a holy sanctuary so I can live among them.

1 Samuel 8:4-8 New Living Translation

4 Finally, all the elders of Israel met at Ramah to discuss the matter with Samuel. 5 “Look,” they told him, “you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have.”
6 Samuel was displeased with their request and went to the Lord for guidance. 7 “Do everything they say to you,” the Lord replied, “for they are rejecting me, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer. 8 Ever since I brought them from Egypt they have continually abandoned me and followed other gods. And now they are giving you the same treatment.

How does the God of all creating wanting to have a relationship with you encourage your heart?

First (Physical) Temple

David Becomes King

1 Chronicles 28:6-7 New Living Translation

6 He said to me, ‘Your son Solomon will build my Temple and its courtyards, for I have chosen him as my son, and I will be his father. 7 And if he continues to obey my commands and regulations as he does now, I will make his kingdom last forever.’

Jeremiah 2:4-5 New Living Translation

4 Listen to the word of the Lord, people of Jacob—all you families of Israel! 5 This is what the Lord says:
“What did your ancestors find wrong with me
that led them to stray so far from me?
They worshiped worthless idols,
only to become worthless themselves.

Jeremiah 52:12-13 New Living Translation

12 On August 17 of that year, which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard and an official of the Babylonian king, arrived in Jerusalem. 13 He burned down the Temple of the Lord, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem. He destroyed all the important buildings in the city.

The Israelites try to change their circumstances instead of themselves.

Share a time when you tried to share your circumstance instead of changing yourself
Example: There was a time when I was a part of the church and I didn't like the leaders. So, I tried switching churches until the Lord convicted me. He changed me internally and I went from wanting to receive to wanting to give.

Second Temple Built

Ezra 1:1-3 New Living Translation

1 In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, the Lord fulfilled the prophecy he had given through Jeremiah. He stirred the heart of Cyrus to put this proclamation in writing and to send it throughout his kingdom:
2 “This is what King Cyrus of Persia says:
“The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth. He has appointed me to build him a Temple at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. 3 Any of you who are his people may go to Jerusalem in Judah to rebuild this Temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, who lives in Jerusalem. And may your God be with you!

1. JESUS CAME

John 1:14 New Living Translation

14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

“His home” Gr: Skeno (verb) To tabernacle. Dwell among…

Revelation 21:3 New Living Translation

3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.

John 1:15-18 New Living Translation

15 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”
16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.

What does it mean that Jesus tabernacled? How does that play our practically in our daily lives?
More than God is with us. Jesus came, tore down the temple and and rose it in three days with His people: us!

2. I BECOME

1 Corinthians 3:17 New Living Translation

17 God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 New Living Translation

19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

Jesus called us to be vessels. What does it mean to become a vessel? How do we become the temple?

3. WE BUILD

Jesus came to build what we become

1 Peter 2:5 New Living Translation

5 And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.

Do we have a compassion and a burning desire for the lost?
